There has been tremendous noise about the government healthcare package in Vietnam and it is finally going to see the light of day. From December 2017, the Basic Healthcare Package is set to launch in Vietnam which is aimed at reducing pressure on which has been placed on government hospitals by bettering facilities at commune level medical facilities. The purpose of the package is simple, help in the prevention of diseases, provide medical consultation to citizens and help the patients receive treatment – all that free of cost as part of Vietnam Social Security.
According to reports, till now only 19% of the local population visited commune level medical facilities of which only 3% were funded by the social security fund of Vietnam. But with the implementation of the basic healthcare package of the people, that is set to change.
The Vietnam Health Ministry will also provide necessary skills to the youth to develop them as resources who can manage these clinics as the country was facing an acute shortage of healthcare professionals, doctors, nurses et al. Under the new scheme of things, people can have access to 76 basic healthcare services and 241 types of medicines at the commune level centers. In fact, medicines for conditions such as diabetes can be obtained from local medical centers which were not possible in the past and patients had to visit the government hospitals for any requirements.
The Ministry of Health in Vietnam has been pushing for reforms in the sector to bring facilities at par with other ASEAN neighbors such as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia. According to state estimates, nearly 70% of the people’s healthcare demands would be met at local medical facilities going forward and hence reduce the dependence on government hospitals.
The government is also pushing for the introduction of technology in the healthcare sector by implementing hospital management systems, laboratory information management systems, clinic management systems etc.
